(Office of Naval Research) The US Department of the Navy continues its move toward renewable energy with an Office of Naval Research-funded solar generator that recently entered full production, with several systems already in the field. The Ground Renewable Expeditionary ENergy System (GREENS) is a portable hybrid battery generator that uses the sun to produce electricity. It was developed to provide Marines in remote locations with battery and plug-in power for charging various devices.

(University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences) Business leaders, media, non-profit organizations, and academia will meet in Champaign, Ill., on Feb. 17 for a first-of-its-kind international agricultural communications symposium open to anyone interested in strengthening communications about food, fiber, feed, renewable energy, rural-urban relations, natural resources, rural development and other dimensions of agriculture.

(Iowa State University) The National Science Foundation is investing $20 million and the Iowa Power Fund another $2 million to build Iowa’s research capacity in sustainable energy systems. Iowa’s public universities — Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa — will make up the core of the research project. The project will support studies in bioenergy, wind energy, energy utilization and energy policy.

(DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) New computer modeling work in the journal Climatic Change shows that by 2100, if society wants to limit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to less than 40 percent higher than it is today, the lowest cost option is to use every available means of reducing emissions. This includes more nuclear and renewable energy, choosing electricity over fossil fuels, reducing emissions through technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide, and even using forests to store carbon.

(Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership) A private-public partnership created to provide renewable energy to two remote South American settlements could light the way for thousands of other similar projects needed around the globe, with potentially profound health, educational and economic benefits. The roadmap to create successful energy-related PPPs will be detailed at a UN Summit June 2.

 Event date: 7-11 September 2009

 Location: Berlin, Germany

 Organizer: Green Dragon Energy

 Topic: Renewable energy

This 5-day seminar in Berlin will explore the role of renewable energy in the urban and semi-urban environment. Germany is the world’s renewable energy leader – 5% of its exports are in the field of energy technology. The seminar will include numerous visits to renewable energy installations in Berlin – PV systems, solar thermal systems, heat pumps, bioenergy plants, low-energy and passive solar buildings.
